David Berkey holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University, a Master of Science in Audiology from the University of Connecticut, and an Au.D. from the Arizona School of Health Sciences, A.T. Still University. He has been actively involved in private practice audiology since 1978 including practice development, ownership and sale. He is a current member of the Academy of Dispensing Audiologists (ADA) board of directors and serves as an officer in the organization. David has actively promoted autonomous audiology through his involvement with various ADA initiatives and committees. He has contributed numerous articles to the ADA Feedback journal and presented on business and professional issues at ADA conventions.

Bob Carton is an Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at Western Carolina University. His areas of teaching and research include new venture creation, new venture finance, new venture growth, value creation for customers, and financial performance measurement. Prior to entering academia, Bob was the chief financial and administrative officer of several different businesses. These included a publicly traded mortgage-banking firm, two venture capital-backed technology companies, a hazardous waste remediation company, and computer software, hardware and leasing company. His experience includes managing all financial and administrative aspects of a company including accounting, human resources, information systems, both government and private contract negotiation, and risk management. He also managed production, purchasing, and distribution functions. Bob received a BS in Management Science and Accounting from Duke University, an MBA from the University of Georgia, and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.

Kim Cavitt received her Bachelor of Arts and her Master of Arts in Audiology degrees from Indiana University. She holds a Doctor of Audiology, Au.D. degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Her professional experience supports a diverse background spanning roles from the Director of Professional Relations for HearPO to providing clinical services in an Ear Nose and Throat physician office. She worked as a clinical audiologist for the Ohio State University College of Medicine as well as clinic supervisor at the Northwestern University Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. She is currently active in the Illinois Academy of Audiology and consults to over 75 audiology and ENT practices regarding practice management and reimbursement issues. She has authored numerous practice management articles for a variety of audiology publications. Kim has presented at over seven workshops and conferences conducted by the American Academy of Audiology and the Academy of Dispensing Audiologists. She has assisted the Academy of Dispensing Audiologists with the practice management reimbursement section of their website and served on the Editorial Advisory Board of Audiology Coding and Billing Alert.

Stephen M. Crow is the Edward G. Schlieder Endowed Chair of Healthcare Initiates in the Department of Management at the University of New Orleans. He received his B.S. Degree from LSU and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of North Texas. Crow joined the University of New Orleans in the fall of 1989 and now teaches healthcare management courses at the graduate level. From 1968 to 1989, he was employed as a human resource manager and professional in a variety of positions and industries, usually as the top ranking personnel officer in the organization. As a researcher, he has published over 100 articles, many in the health care field. He was the driving force behind establishing the executive and the evening graduate programs in healthcare management at UNO. Crow is also an arbitrator on the panel of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services.

Larry Engelmann earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in hearing and speech science at the University of Florida, his Master of Science degree in Audiology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and his Doctor of Audiology degree at the Arizona School of Health Sciences, a division of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He started his career almost 30 years ago in a large otology practice as a clinical and research audiologist. He has owned his private practice for nearly 25 years. Throughout his career, he has assisted in bringing both the cochlear implant and one of the middle ear implantable hearing devices from FDA research and to market distribution; served as the consulting audiologist for several healthcare agencies; taught in the areas of neurodiagnostics, vestibular assessment, auditory processing, and starting and operating an audiology private practice; served on the Audiology Foundation of America's board of directors for seven years and its executive committee, the board's secretary, the chair of the public relations committee, member of the student activities committee and the state regulations committee; serves on the Oklahoma State Hearing Aid Advisory Council; has served on the Academy of Dispensing Audiologists board for the last five years, on its student outreach committee and chair of the model licensure law committee, and is currently president-elect; and he has authored numerous articles related to audiology becoming an autonomous doctoring profession.

Kathy Foltner received her Bachelor of Science degree from Ithaca College, her Master of Arts degree in Audiology from Michigan State University and her Doctor of Audiology, Au.D. degree from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, School of Audiology. She has been an advocate for private practice audiology since 1980 when she founded Audio-Vestibular Testing Center, Inc.. The business was sold in 1994 to a national health care consolidator. Kathy went on to several executive positions with major industry network and preferred provider groups. She now offers complete healthcare business consulting for private practice audiologists through Foltner Consulting. Kathy also serves as CEO for AuDNet, a national branding network and buying group, headquartered in Burnsville, MN. She has extensive clinical experience in the Ear Nose and Throat physician arena as well as professional business experience in private practice development, promotion and sale. Her expertise in the corporate environment includes an emphasis on successful strategic growth management. Kathy has a special interest in mentoring those interested in autonomous practice. She has authored numerous articles and presented extensively at various workshops and conferences on practice management and business issues.

Dr. Sandra Hartman specializes in organizational behavior, employee motivation, leadership, and organizational politics. Sandra Hartman has been on the faculty at the University of New Orleans since 1981 and is currently Chase Professor of Management. Hartman worked in a wide variety of management positions over a 20 year period. Her jobs ranged from managing construction crews to training director for Playboy. She has also served as president of the Southwest Academy of Management. She holds a B.S. in Psychology from Purdue University an M.S. in Psychology from Memphis State, and has an MBA from George Washington University, and a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University.

Steve W. Henson is an Associate Professor of Marketing at Western Carolina University. Steve's industry experience includes five years in banking and financing with GE Capital, plus ten years at Ciba Vision Care, where he helped create one of the optometry industry's first practice management and support programs. Steve was founder of the highly successful executive education program at the University of New Orleans and served as its Director for five years. He has five journal publications on training and education needs for professional practices during the current academic year and will be the primary facilitator for the marketing strategy aspects of the program. He also has primary responsibility for curriculum development and management.

Joseph K. Kiely has had extensive experience in both the academic and corporate world of investments and finance. He received BA’s in both Management and Mathematics from the University of Tampa, an MBA from the University of South Florida and his Ph.D. in Finance from Texas A&M University. He has 12 years of teaching experience in adjunct, assistant and graduate professorship roles at the University of South Florida, Texas A& M University, Houston Executive MBA College, and California State University. Subjects taught include Corporate Finance, Investments and Graduate Studies, Economics and Statistics, Money and Capital Markets, Price Theory and Micro/Macroeconomics. His real world business experience spans systems engineer/quality control, financial planning seminar consultant/instructor, real estate management and independent insurance agency ownership, weekly financial newspaper columnist and his current role of corporate education and asset management director at Kiely Financial Services, Inc. Joe has authored numerous professional business journal articles, working papers and two books, Investment Strategies for the 21st Century and The Obvious Portfolio: Tools Your Broker Wishes You Never Knew. He is a prolific contributor to corporate events having presented at over 50 business seminars all over the world as well as at over 35 university and college sponsored workshops. Joe has been a frequent and popular presenter at the Academy of Dispensing Audiologist’s annual conventions.

Bryan A. Liang is Executive Director and Professor of Law, Institute of Health Law Studies, California Western School of Law, and Co-Director and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, San Diego Center for Patient Safety, UCSD School of Medicine. In addition, he serves as Adjunct Associate Professor of Public Health, College of Health and Human Services, San Diego State University, and Adjunct Professor of Aviation, College of Aviation, Western Michigan University. Dr. Liang's work focuses upon the interface of law, policy, and health care in areas that implicate the safe and ethical delivery of quality care. He received a BS degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; PhD from University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy Studies; MD from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons; and JD from Harvard Law School.

Dr. Pressley is a Professor of Marketing, S. D. Leyda University Teaching Fellow, and former Department Chairman at the University of New Orleans, UNO. He has taught in Australia, Austria, Croatia, France, Hungary and most recently at the University of Cambridge in England. His publications include over a dozen books and monographs , twenty-four journal/blind-refereed articles, and fourteen other works in non-refereed publications including the Wall Street Journal. Professor Pressley is the past president or association chairman for a number of organizations including the American Marketing Association – NC Chapter and the Atlantic Marketing Association. An experienced Board of Directors Member, Dr. Pressley served for 12 years on the board for Consumers Union, and has also held Board of Directors and/or management positions with ten other organizations. Dr. Pressley has consulted with a number of major organizations from the American Dental Association to Shell Oil’s Offshore Division and has owned and operated several businesses.

Michael Smith is an associate professor of management and international business and the Director of the MBA program at Western Carolina University. Mike has over 15 years industry experience in a variety of management and executive positions. His expertise is in supply chain management and operations management. He emphasizes business performance through systematic management of inter- and intra-firm relationships.

Dennis Van Vliet has a Bachelor of Science degree from UC Irvine; a Master of Arts degree from Cal-State University, Fullerton; and a Doctor of Audiology degree from Central Michigan University. He has worked as an audiologist in medical, educational and private practice settings. Professional activities have included formation of the Independent Hearing Aid Fitting Forum, a volunteer study group that developed a comprehensive hearing aid fitting protocol for nonlinear hearing aids. He has been invited as a speaker in the U.S., Canada and Germany to present information on a variety of hearing aid technology topics and other professional issues. His opinions are expressed monthly in the “Final Word” feature of the Hearing Journal.

Susan Williamson, audiologist and gerontologist, received her Master’s in Audiology from Purdue University and her Doctorate in Audiology from the University of Florida. She’s been an advocate for the private practice audiology movement for 25 years. She has contributed several articles and presented both nationally and regionally on a variety of topics related to private practice, hearing loss and hearing help. She recently served as Staff Audiologist for the Academy of Dispensing Audiologists, Chicago, IL., as well as editor of the academy’s Feedback magazine. Susan is actively involved in professional issues and consults to the hearing industry. She is certified in gerontology by Western Carolina University and is passionate about helping others better understand the role good hearing plays in healthy aging.
